Very Pleased1 to Meet You
During2 World War3 II, a lot of young women in Britain4 were in the army5. Joan Phillips was6 one of them. She worked in a big camp7, and of course8 met a lot of men, officers10 and soldiers11.
One evening she met Captain12 Humphreys at a dance. He said13 to her, "I'm going14 abroad15 tomorrow, but I'd be very happy if we could16 write to each other." Joan agreed17, and they wrote18 for several19 months.
Then his letters stopped, but she received20 one from another officer9, telling her that he had21 been wounded22 and was in a certain23 army hospital in England.
Joan went there and said to the matron, "I've come to visit Captain Humphreys."
"Only relatives24 are allowed25 to visit patients26 here," the matron said.
"Oh, that's all right," answered Joan. "I'm his sister."
"I'm very pleased to meet you," the matron said, "I'm his mother!"
