With the ultimate goal of staging peaceful Olympic Games, the Security Work Coordination1 Group of the Beijing Olympic Games has brought the successful completion of the main structures of a number of world-renowned projects, relevant official said on Wednesday.
Liu Shaowu, deputy director of Beijing's Public Security Bureau, said the bureau had been involved in the research and study of the security for the Olympic venues2 and formulated3 a series of plans and manuals since March 2002.
The plans and manuals were fully5 carried out in December 2003, when construction began on the National Stadium, known as the 'Bird's Nest', and the National Aquatics6 Center, dubbed7 the 'Water Cube', Liu said.
The Security Work Coordination Group of the Beijing Olympic Games, a national organization, was established later, namely in December 2004, to deal with all questions related to the safety of the Olympic venues in Beijing, as well as in the co-host cities.
"Thanks to high-tech9 facilities," Liu said, "(the security personnel) has created a complete security network for the Olympic projects."
Liu also attributed the success of the security work so far to the participation10 of the owners and construction teams and the strict checkup of all the construction materials.
For the 29th Olympic Games, 31 competition venues, 45 training venues and five affiliated11 facilities are located in Beijing, while six competition venues are situated12 in the co-host cities, viz., Qingdao, Hong Kong, Tianjin, Shanghai, Shenyang and Qinhuangdao.
