It was the first time he had ever run under 13 seconds, in training or racing¹. "Given the Asian physiology², few expected that a Chinese would ever be able to run under 13 seconds," he said. "I believe this is like a sort of miracle. What has happened is incredible, but I will keep on working very hard in the future and you can expect more miracles to happen."

The miracle form suddenly disappeared, however. Later in 2004 and in 2005 Xiang struggled to recover the world beating form that led to him equalling the world record in his Olympic run. At the 2005 IAAF World Championships in Helsinki, Finland, Xiang only achieved silver in a very tight race. Frenchman Ladji Doucoure won after battling with Allen Johnson in the middle lanes and just crossing the line ahead of Xiang. Doucoure won with 13.07, beating Xiang’s 13.08 by the tightest of margins³.
