Day 7: Oct. 7 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WILMINGTON, N.C. -- When Michael Jordan announced his intentions to play for the Washington Wizards, the phones in the ticket office at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington began lighting1 up. Those wanting tickets to see Jordan's first intrasquad scrimmage would have to shell out $130 for a season's ticket. Consider this bargain: not only do you get to see Jordan, but Towson State too! The Player Formerly2 Known As The Best will put his still considerable wares3 on display Tuesday night at Trask Coliseum. It will be interesting to see how much Jordan plays, and whether the 6,100 fans wind up feeling as if they got their money's worth. (For those who were left disappointed, there's always Towson, led by Tamir Goodman, aka "The Jewish Jordan".) New Wizards coach Doug Collins might have been trying to let those folks down easy when he said he didn't know how much Jordan would play during the exhibition season. Jordan knows it won't be good PR in his hometown if he only makes a cameo, so he might try to go a little longer than he planned and cut down on the minutes when the Wizards play their first exhibition Thursday against the Detroit Pistons4. "I think Doug is really trying to monitor my workouts," Jordan said after participating in most of the team's private scrimmage Monday night. "I think he is going to use the scrimmage (Tuesday) to evaluate some of the other guys." But whatever he gives the fans in Wilmington will be more than they got last year, when Jordan was sitting in the stands with them as president of the team. If they had been polled5 then and asked, 'What would you pay to see Michael Jordan play again, if only for 10 minutes?", most would probably said more than the $130. And look at it this way: you get to see "The Jewish Jordan" too. |
