A commercial bank (CB) is an organization established to: accept deposits from individuals and businesses; originate credit by providing loans and offering other financial services essential to the running of a customer's financial or business affairs, including fund transfers, check cashing, safe deposit boxes, etc. In China CBs operate under the supervision¹ of the People's Bank of China and business operations must follow the Commercial Banking² Law of China. Although CBs do not issue currency, they manage it. Examples of large CBs in China are: Bank of China, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Agricultural Bank of China, China Construction Bank. These 4 banks differ from most foreign CBs, because they are state-owned. However, because these banks are now responsible for their own profitability and compliance³ with the banking regulations, they are in a practical sense like regular CBs.
