You needn't write me another chequeJust change the date and initial1 it

I'm in no hurryHe needn't send it by airHe can send it by sea

You needn't do it by handI'll lend you my machine

You needn't call me Mr JonesWe all use first names here

College lecturerYou needn't type your essays but you must write legi- bly

Tom doesn't have to wear uniform at school

We don't have to type our essays but we have to write legibly

When I'm an old age pensioner2 I won't have to pay any more bus fares

Ann hasn't got to godoesn't have to go to this lectureAttendance3 is op- tional

When I have a telephone of my own I won't have to waste time waiting outside these wretched4 telephone boxes

Ann doesn't have to cook for herselfShe works at a hotel and gets all hermeals there

3 然而,有时need not也可以用于表示外界权威,以代替won't don't need towon'tdon't have to等各种形式。

I needn'twon'tdon't have to type this report todayMr Jones said that there was no hurry about it

I'm retiringAfter Friday I need never go to the office again

I don't have to queue for my busI get on at the terminus

not。)

didn't have to 是最常用的:

I didn't have to wait longHe was only a few minutes late

When he was at university he didn't have toneed to pay anything for his keepfor he stayed with his uncle
