The trend of semicolon tattoos2 was started by Project Semicolon. It encourages people to draw (or tattoo1) semicolons on their bodies as a way of presenting hope and love to those struggling with depression, anxiety, suicide, self-harm and other forms of mental illness.
Project Semicolon's website explains the idea behind the tattoo: "A semicolon is used when an author could've chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life."
People who suffer from mental illness all over the world are now tattooing3 the mark as a reminder4 of their struggle, victory, and survival.
