Run is a word that is used in so many different ways than just moving fast. When a TV show "ends its run," it stops. When someone "runs on at the mouth," that means1 he talks too much. If you get a "run" in your stocking2, that means you have a long tear. If your job "runs its course," that means the job is over. If you find another job that is even better, "run for it," which means hurry to get that job. If you don't get that new job, you "made a run for it", meaning you tried. If you "run up" a bill, that means you are ordering too much food or drink. When you "run the numbers," you check the charges on that bill. Run除了“跑”的意思,还有很多种用法。比如,电视节目可以end its run(停播);某人可能run on at the mouth(话太多);长袜可能get a run(抽丝了)。 如果你的工作run its course,意思是工作结束了。如果你发现一份更好的工作,那就要run for it(赶快争取)。如果你没有得到那份新工作,你可以说你已经made a run for it(努力过了)。如果你run up一份账单,意味着你点了太多吃的。当你run the numbers,就是说你算一下账单上的费用。 |
