  1. topic:  The government is responsible for protecting a nation’s cultural identity. Thus, some people believe new buildings should be built in traditional styles. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

[参考范文]
In modern cities, erections have become one of city’s identities, representing architect’s concept and people’s esthetic1 preference. Some people insist buildings should be built in more traditional styles, in order to highline the cultural identity, while some people believe it is unnecessary.
Admittedly, traditional styled buildings are cultural legacy2 of our ancestors, which represent a history of thousands years. But they falsely take the assumption that traditional building is the only type of architecture that reflects culture. Actually, a nation’s culture is constituted with a lot of elements, covering architecture, festivals and customs, and can be classified into historic culture and modern culture. Therefore, regarding traditional styled buildings as cultural identity is one-sided and partial.
I do agree that buildings should be designed as a symbol of a nation’s culture, but I don’t agree that the more traditional styled buildings, the more cultural distinctive3 our nation is. So, I my opinion, I suggest the government should develop multiple building styles, incorporating both the traditional style and the modern style. To begin with, our culture is developing with the time, which makes itself different from periods. That’s why there are traditional style of old pried4 and modern style of nowadays.

Therefore, the combination of the traditional and the modern can fully5 unfold cultures of different eras. For example, most England cities I visited are pride for both their historic buildings and modern skyscrapers6. Manchester’s imperial war museum, a perfect combination with history and modern design, has an external appearance like a flying machine and many internal exhibitions like a mysterious kingdom. What’s more, using modern architectural technology can help the government conserve7 old buildings better. Once all the historic architectural heritages are repaired, a clear vision of real traditional culture would be presented.
All things considered, I think a wise government should not neglect the significance of modern style in the cultural identity, and thus focus on the combination of traditional buildings and modern buildings.
  2.       Should criminals be sent to a jail or let them do something else as punishment instead of sending into a jail? Why and give your reasons.
[参考范文]
For hundreds of years long, criminals are restrained all day long in prisons as punishment. But today, some new punishments, such as labor8 intensive work and educational reform, have partly taken the place of previous captivity9. The means of punishment is no longer restricted to a jail.
Of course, sending a criminal to a jail is the safest way for administrators10 to manage prisoners, and also the most rigorous way of punishing a criminal. Criminals are always highly related to the thieves, robbers, rappers, or who are extremely aggressive and harmful to innocent civilians11. Once put them in the public before they are totally reformed, an unpredictable vicious result is probably to happen-- innocent lives may be threatened and private properties may be endangered. That’s why most people strongly insist criminals should be jailed in prison.
However, there are some alternatives that can provide criminals a chance to contribute back to our society, while dangerous risks are restricted at an extremely low level. That is what is prevailing12 in modern prisons—criminals are still kept in the prison, but are allowed to work and study out of their jails during the daytime. It is certainly much more profitable for both criminals and our society. In one hand, in criminals’ prison lives, they learn the experiences of a specified13 work and the knowledge of how to be a good man, which would help them revive and lead a normal life. In other hand, criminals’ productive work will do contribute to the local productivity, and ever help to propel the booming economic.
Therefore, I believe the combination of the previous captivity and the present labor-reformation is the best solution of punishing criminals. In this way, criminals would get what they deserve, and begin a new life, also our society can get reimbursed14 form those criminals.
  3.       People think of that the news media have influential15 people's lives nowadays it is a negative development to what extent do you agree or disagree.
[参考范文]
The 21st century has witnessed the fast development of mass media, from the prevailing newspapers to the booming internet. Almost everyday, more or less, people are exposed to news media, influenced by news media, and even rely on news media. It becomes hard to identify whether it is positive or negative.
People who are bothered by daily mews media hold a negative view towards. They has a recognition that news media are distorting people’s real thought, and enforce a false illusion on people’s minds. In other words, the over commercially developed media are tend to provide information that people don’t need, and always are persuading people to believe what they says. Moreover, news media sometimes have a poor occupational discipline and a bad professional morality. In order to win more audience, the even fabricate false news, regardless what the real situation is. Therefore, a lot of people lose their faith in news media.
However, if we assess the function of news media objectively, we can get a conclusion that news media are generally playing a positive role, while sometimes make some mistakes. Journalists, as a whole, are professionally trained, and thus act justly when facing an event. With the help of journalists, we are able to get first hand information on what is happening all over the world, and we are able to enter the information ear. Moreover, news media are playing the role of an educator. In one hands, people learn from the facts through news, which indirectly16 enhanced their experience. On the other hand, most news media also have educational columns, enabling learners to have an access to a specific sphere.
In my view of point, news media is a propeller17 of modern civilization, although it may annoy some people. Nevertheless, If we took a macro view of news media and avoid partial recognition, we can find it not only informative18 but also educational.
  4.       Environment problems are too big for individual countries and individual people to address. We have reached the stage where the only way to protect the environment is at an international level. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement.
