An elementary¹ school teacher asked a student why he was² late.

He replied³, “A nearby⁴ sign said⁵. ‘School ahead⁶, slow down, go slow,' so that's what I did⁷.'

表示“做什么事迟到",可以直接在late的后面加动名词，如:I was very late getting home yesterday.我昨天很晚回家。也可以加上for，再加名词，如:He was late for meeting⁸.他开会迟到了。

句中第一个slow是动词，表示“减速”、他后面的down是副词,表示“减弱”;第二个slow是副词,表示“缓慢地”，

slow 放在动作动词后面当副词，是口语用法。在美国，当你看到黄色菱形标志上面写着SCHOOL CROSSING,或是黄色长方形标志，上面有一个奔跑的孩子，上方写着SLOW,表示你将进入学校区。在美国的学校区内违规，驾驶执照可能会被吊销。
