4. Job satisfaction is more important than salary. Consider job satisfaction as well as salary, suggests Rachelle Canter, author of "Make the Right Career Move." Launch yourself in a direction you want to go by considering the skills you have and enjoy using, skills you want to acquire and rewards that are meaningful to you.

All of these questions are key indicators² of an employer's brand and how much a company invests in its employees, says Ed Lawler, professor of the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California.
