自2003年执教中国男子乒乓球队以来，刘国梁取得了不俗的带队成绩。特别是在2006德国不莱梅世乒赛男团决赛上，他带领卫冕冠军中国队以3比0大胜最大劲敌韩国队，实现了世乒赛男团三连冠，这也是中国男队第15次捧起斯韦思林杯。正如他在赛前曾说的，“我喜欢出征的感觉，喜欢比赛的刺激，当队员我是大满贯，当教练，我也要拿所有的冠军。”
