K: Do you know Miss Shelly¹ Mann?

K: 你知道Shelly Mann小姐吗？

J: Of course. She was an American athlete. She got the Olympic gold medal.

K: But do you know she got polio?

J: Sorry, I have no idea. I know this disease² affects the spinal³ cord⁴ and makes it difficult to move the body.

K: Yes. The doctor recognized she had this terrible disease when she was six years old. As the years went by, she gradually⁵ lost the power to move her fingers and toes, her arms and her legs.

J: It's too terrible.

K: She could hardly move any part of her body little by little.

K: At the moment she could only do one thing that she tried to enter the swimming pool.

K: In water, she felt more equal to other children. Swimming soon became the most important part of her life.
