Beijing, May 2 - Guanghe Theater, the oldest in Beijing, is to be torn down during the May Day holiday week.

The theater was built during the Ming Dynasty. With a history of more than 360 years, it is thought to be the cradle of Peking Opera.

Many eminent1 Peking Opera actors have performed on its stage, including Mei Lanfang, who gave his first performance at the theatre at the age of 10. Despite its past popularity, the theatre has given way to the ravages2 of time. The building has been abandoned for almost 20 years.

The overnment plans to spend 50 million yuan rebuilding the theater. Like the Broadway theaters of New York in the United States, the new theater will be equipped with high-tech3 facilities and have regular shows all year round.
