Chinanews, Beijing, May 30 – A new TV series, Household Affairs, will be shown on CCTV during prime time hours starting from this evening, indicating that emotional TV series have resumed their popularity on screen after audience gets bored with such topics as martial1 arts, urban life stories, marriage issue, and stories about pop idols2.
Without celebrity3 stars or big production costs, the TV series might also become audiences' favorite pick. According to related Chinese media rules, TV dramas that touch the "third party" issue are not allowed to be broadcast at prime time hours on CCTV. In order to comply with these rules, director of Household Affairs cut five episodes from the original version, leaving only an old mother and her four daughters to become the main characters. The plot of the show is rather plain and the characters in it are also ordinary people. However, when the show had its premiere, many people were deeply moved by it, because the drama focuses on ordinary people's life. The new TV series remind Li Peisen, director of the CCTV television production department, of other similar emotional teledramas shown on CCTV earlier. These dramas include My Parents, My Nine Daughters and The Romantic Story. Every time, the broadcast of such shows would push up the audience ratings. “I haven't expected that the show, My Parents, would have led to a very high audience rating. The drama was actually made ten years ago. It only proves that the public are really interested in watching something that reflects their own life,” Li said. In the early 1990s, an emotional teledrama, Aspiration4, had swept China. At that time, the show touched people's heart with the kind deeds done by the main characters in the drama. Years later, many Chinese people are indulged in watching some TV shows that can move them to tears. Nowadays, people like to see teledramas in which the main characters are just like ordinary people living an ordinary life. The audience of such emotional shows have also changed. In the past, most of the audience of such shows were middle-aged5 housewives. However, as more and more people born in the post-1980s enter the job market today, more and more young people also cherish traditional family values and therefore, they are the potential target audience for such stories. The TV play,Household Affairs, was adapted from the novel, The Beijing Families, written by Liu Zengxin. It focuses on traditional family values. However, different from previous plays of this kind that are often made into a serious type, Household Affairs is made into a TV comedy. While experiencing the sweet family atmosphere in the drama, audiences can't help bursting into laughs from time to time by the funny stories happening in it.
