Chinanews, Beijing, May 30 – Terra cotta, a symbol of ancient Chinese civilization made 2,000 years ago, might appear in the 2008 Olympic closing ceremony, CRI online reported.
Shaanxi provincial1 government hopes that Olympic ceremony director Zhang Yimou might consider including the terra cotta, an embodiment of the ancient Chinese history and culture, in the Olympic opening and closing ceremony, said Jiang Huili, deputy2 director of the Shaanxi Provincial Bureau of Culture. She made the statement on May 28 when attending a press conference held for the Sino-Russia Friendly Tour China Week event. Interestingly enough, the general director of the Olympic opening ceremony Zhang Yimou and vice3 director Chen Weiya were both born in Xi'an. The discovery of terra cotta was considered as a world wonder since it was unearthed4 decades ago. In 1979, the Qinshihuang Terra Cotta Museum was open to the public. So far, about 50 million visitors have come to visit the museum from home and abroad. In 2006, about 2.8 million Chinese and foreign tourists visited the museum, said Wu Yongqi, curator of the Qinshihuang Terra Cotta Museum. This reporter has found that one-third of the people visiting the museum are foreign tourists. One visitor, who came from Arkansas of the United States, told this reporter that he had never seen terra cotta before and he was amazed by the highly developed ancient Chinese civilization and the fine work of art. His friend said that the idea of including terra cotta in the Olympic Games was very interesting. “Foreigners are very interested in Chinese history and terra cotta is an important part of Chinese history,” the American visitor said.
