Chinanews, Shenzhen, Jun. 15 – Ordinary citizens feel it difficult to buy famous paintings, but currently1 in Dafen Village in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, most painters’ copied works2, from da Vinci’s in the Renaissance3 period to modern English artist Damien Hirst’s, can be found there, but all these works are copies.
In 1989, a Hong Kong businessman named Huang Jiang started selling paintings in Dafen Village. Now the village has 300 galleries, and most of them can produce copies of famous paintings. It is also regarded as China’s No. 1 oil painting village. Every year, some 8,000 artists make 5 million replicas4 of the work from Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers to da Vinci’s works. The village even attracts buyers from Russia and the U.S. One such painting is sold at only 10 pounds.
