Chinanews, Beijing, Aug 15 – By the end of July, about 140 museums had been registered with the Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage. This means that 10,000 Beijing residents own one museum on average, which is relatively1 the same level as that in moderately developed countries, said Shu Xiaofeng, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage.
He made the statement on Tuesday when attending a meeting held to summarise2 the work done by staff working in various museums in Beijing. In this year alone, Beijing has built seven new museums, the most in history. The newly built museums include Former Residence of Chinese Revolutionist Li Dazhao; Museum of Tablets Related with Imperial Civil Examinations Made During Various Dynasties; China Film Museums; Museums of Temples built for Emperors in Various Dynasties; and China Post and Stamps Museum. Over the past ten years, Beijing has built over 40 museums, with 3-5 new museums being set up every year. Beijing is not only a city that has the most number of museums in the world, its construction speed for museums is also the quickest, said Shu. A distinctive3 feature is that nowadays, many museums are run by private collectors. Privately4 run museums have become an important part of the museums in Beijing. Many private entrepreneurs and individual collectors are eager to open their private museums. During the first half of this year, about 20-30 private museums were registered in Beijing. They include the Hutong Zhang Old Beijing Folk Museum and the Museum of Tablets related with Imperial Civil Examinations Made During Various Dynasties.
