Chinanews, Xiamen, Aug 15 – More and more Confucius Institutes have sprung up in foreign countries, said Zhao Guocheng, deputy director of the Office of Chinese Language Council International, or Hanban.
Confucius Institutes have emerged amid the Chinese language learning fever occurring in many countries. Many foreigners want to learn Chinese in order to be able to communicate and do business with Chinese people by using Chinese language, Zhao said. The Xiamen Daily recently reported that a group of Chinese scholars had indicated their willingness to go to the Confucius Institutes set up in various countries around the world to give lectures about Chinese culture. The lectures will focus on two main aspects: one about Chinese history and culture and the other about China's economic and social development, a teacher from Fujian Province's Xiamen University attending a work meeting about Confucius Institutes told this reporter last Sunday. The lecture tour will help more foreigners to know about the Confucius Institutes and upgrade their teaching quality and their fame in countries where the institutes are in operation. The team will consist of experts on Sinology, economics, laws, business and tourism, Zhao said. The Confucius Institutes aim at helping1 more foreigners to study Chinese language and Chinese culture. The first Confucius Institute was set up in South Korea in 2004. At present, China has set up many Confucius Institutes by cooperating with local universities. So far, China has established more than 180 Confucius Institutes in 55 countries and regions. These include several Confucius schools set up in the primary and middle schools overseas. About 100 Confucius Institutes have been put into operation, said a person at Hanban.
