Chinanews, Guangzhou, Sep 1 – Among China’s 55 ethnic1 minorities, there is one called “Shui”. Currently more and more Shui people are reluctant to use their own script, which is reducing it to brine of extinction2. Some college students from Guangdong Province have organized a wide variety of activities this summer to get people to know the importance of the Shui script as a cultural heritage.
Zhong Guoxiong, a college student from Guangzhou, is one main organizer of these activities. He said there are 400 Shui words that belong to the Chinese-Tibetan language family, and they are largely used in wizardry. Local experts believe these words have been in use than the oracle3 bone script of the Shang Dynasty (1600-1100 B.C.). During these students’ activities they found that the Guizhou provincial4 government had tried its best to protect the Shui language, but few young Shui people wanted to use it. It is said that those 400 Shui words can only be inherited by males.
