Chinanews, Qingdao, Oct. 19 – “These two bunkers in this compound should be an abandoned arsenal1 of German soldiers,” said Zhang Shufeng, a scholar from Qingdao Academy of Social Sciences. Local citizens found these bunkers recently, and they asked historians2 and scholars to investigate. Zhang said that these bunkers were built in the late 19th century.
Mr. Yu, a local citizen, said he found these bunkers on his way to collect medical herbs. He led an exploration team on Tuesday, and our reporter also went to explore the bunkers. The bunkers occupies an area of 1,000 sq m, with 4 gates and 6 windows all made in Germany. Zhang introduced the German bunkers on China Central Television last year. He said that Germany regarded Qingdao as a crucial military base after it occupied the city in 1897. German soldiers built various buildings, bunkers, and gun emplacements. He thought the newly found bunkers were used to store weapons. He said that these bunkers should be well protected, and use them to develop local tourism.
