Chinanews, Beijing, December 12 - The Second Confucius Institute Conference was kicked off on December 11 in Beijing, with the delegates from more than 60 countries and regions taking part in it.
The first batch1 of Confucius Institutes were founded in 2004, and they have developed at very fast speed since then. In July, 2006, when the first Confucius Institute Conference was held, there were 80 Confucius Institutes in 36 countries and regions. By now, there are 130 such institutes available (125 already in operation) in 64 countries and regions. Some 200 organizations in 61 countries have handed in their applications for building Confucius Institutes in their countries. The numbers of faculty2 members and students in Confucius Institutes worldwide have broken 1,000 and 46,000 respectively. Though Confucius Institutes are on the rise, they still have a long way to go to become outstanding educational institutions, as there are not enough qualified3 teachers, let alone well-compiled textbooks. Teaching Chinese culture and Chinese language in a totally foreign environment is also a new topic to educationalists both at home and abroad.
