Chinanews, Shanghai, Dec. 16 – The number of Chinese students studying abroad has witnessed a rise this year in most of the countries where they stay. Faced with the rise, many countries have issued policies that aim at attracting more Chinese students to study there. It is expected that in 2008, the overseas market for Chinese students will remain promising1, according to information released Wednesday at the Fifth Shanghai Overseas Study Annual Forum2, the Shanghai Evening Post reported.
On Wednesday, nearly all of the foreign officials who introduced their countries’ overseas study policy at the forum stated that the number of Chinese students who studied in their country had risen dramatically this year. In 2006-2007, about 67,000 Chinese students went to the United States for study, with the number increasing by 8.2%, or 5,000, from the previous year. Last October, the number of Chinese students who studied in Australia rose by 18.5% from the same period last year. In Canada, from January to August, the number of Chinese students who applied3 for studying there rose by 16% compared with the same period last year and more than 7,000 of them have obtained their visas. In order to attract more Chinese students to come and study, many countries have issued some new policies favorable to Chinese students. While these countries have loosen their restrictions4 on visa issue, they have also publicized some policies that encourage Chinese students to stay and work there after graduation.
