Shanghai only has 100 days left in which to iron out消除,解决 all the kinks and make sure the city is expo-friendly in order to achieve its goals.

By playing host to the 2010 World Expo, Shanghai is looking to roll back its glorious past, consolidate1巩固,联合 the world's confidence in overcoming the economic meltdown and push forward with an already breathtaking transformation2 in this city of 18.6 million.

With an official budget of 28.7 billion yuan ($4.2 billion), Shanghai intends to carve a place in expo history by topping milestones3 set by previous World Expos, such as the 1893 Columbia Expo, which introduced the Ferris wheel摩天轮.

"For China, the World Expo is a testament遗嘱,圣约 to the nation's rapid growth in the past 30 years. It is also a symbol of the nation's power," said Wang Jinzhen, vice-chairman of the China Council for the Promotion5 of International Trade中国国际贸易促成委员会 (CCPIT).

It will also fuel Shanghai's economic expansion, upgrade the restructuring of local industry, strengthen its integration6综合,集成 with nearby economies, and propel the city's urban development, he added.

It is estimated that the expo will help the city's economy grow by 2 percent this year. Revenue from the expo economy will amount to 100 billion yuan and thousands of new jobs will be created.

Shanghai has latched7 onto紧抓,获得 the expo as a chance to establish a powerful global profile in the same way the Beijing Olympics put a spotlight8 on the nation's capital in 2008.

The city is ready for the cultural gala, and not just because of the huge amount of money the government is pouring into new landmark9 structures. Rather, it marks a shift in the city's psyche灵魂,心智 from that of nervous upstart to one full of confidence about the future.

The six-month party is also advancing a larger government goal of bolstering11 the economy and turning Shanghai into a global financial and shipping12 center and a world-class city in the same league as New York and London.

When the event kicks off in May, Shanghai will have two new airport terminals and a subway system longer than its counterparts in New York and Tokyo.

At the 5.28-sq-km expo garden, upwards13 of 800,000 visitors are expected to punch their tickets at the gate every day - equivalent to等于,相当于 dropping a different European city into the middle of Shanghai seven days a week.

Furthermore, the city's officials and economists14 are waiting to see if the expo can help transform the city from an economy based on manufacturing to one based on high-value-added services.

As outlined in government reports, one of Shanghai's key tasks until 2012 is to quicken the pace of its economic development, with the service sector15 at its core.

By 2012, the service industry will be worth over 1.1 trillion yuan and will account for more than 80 percent of the GDP of the city's central areas.

"In addition to giving Shanghai's infrastructure16 a boost, the expo will lay the foundation for the development of new industries such as tourism and a series of service sectors," said Zhou Hanmin, deputy director of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai Executive Committee.

Xu Wei, a strategist with Sinolink Securities, sees the upcoming expo, together with the city's planned Disneyland, as something that can help address fundamental economic challenges.

According to his research, the city's economy hit a bottleneck17 in 2000, since which time it has relied on the booming housing market for short-term expansion.

"The biggest problem facing Shanghai's economy is being able to find a long-term driving force, which the government has proposed to vitalize赋予生命,激发 the service economy服务经济," he said.

The city's service sector will be hugely lifted by the expo, which, together with the proposed new Disneyland, will create unprecedented18空前的 opportunities for growth for Shanghai's service economy, Xu added.
