Chinanews, Shijiazhuang, December 14 - The emergency center in Qinglong Manchu Autonomous1 County, Hebei Province, has received 134 women who had tried to commit suicide this year.
In fact, about 1,014 people tried to take their own lives in the last 3 years in Qinglong, 476 of whom eventually died, 71% being female. Once 25 women in the same village killed themselves in a short period of time. A research finds that most people in the county who made light of their lives were under educated people, 96% of them being farmers in their 30s to 50s, who had to carry the heavy economic burden and to survive the ebb2 and flow of marriage. Most of the victims killed themselves by taking pesticide3, or bittern, which is commonly used to make beancurd. Currently, the local Women's Federation4 is working to stop the tragedies from happening again. May their hard work not end in vain.
