Chinanews, Dalian, December 14 – It is a tradition of the Chinese to raise children to provide against old age, but many people in Dalian today start to buy housings to support themselves in the future instead.
Since there is only one child in most families in China nowadays, it will be unpractical for parents to depend on their kids in the future. In a recent survey in Dalian, about 14.6% of the responders say yes to this old practice, but another 5% appreciate DINK lifestyle, a new high. Many Dalian residents believe their pension and rent from the housings will provide them with a well-off life after retirement1, so some of them have bought more than one housing. “I don't expect my son to support me when I become old, because there will be too much pressure upon him,”said Gao, who had just bought his second apartment by instalment. It can be estimated that many of these “second”housings will be used to build family rest homes in the future, which will grant the senior citizens a more harmonious2 old age than in traditional old age homes.
