Chinanews, Beijing, January 24 – More than 60% of single-child families in Beijing pick medical services as their biggest problem, rather than pension, employment, education or housing. In fact, the single-child allowance from the government is hardly helpful to solving these problems at all.
According to a report by Jiusan Society, there are 1.45 million single children who are under 18 years old, and the number of those who are between 19 and 30 is 2.5 million. It means that 3.95 million families in Beijing are faced with higher social risks in old-age care, and the children casualties than traditional families. The amount of allowances was decided1 in the late 1970s, when the price of commodities was low. Now the 10-yuan allowance every month is far from enough. Though most single-child families lead a fairly well-off life, medicare, education and job-hunting of the children still lay a heavy burden upon them.
