Chinanews, Shanghai, Jan. 25 – Due to a wrong calculating method, China’s divorce rate reaches a number twice as much as the actual number. The wrong calculating method has been used for nearly two decades, Shanghai Evening Post reported.
Since China first released its divorce rate in the 1980s, the figure had always been based on a wrong calculating method. The false information also made many scholars and media draw wrong conclusions about divorce situations in China. Recently, in response to the call of some scholars in Shanghai, the wrong number has been corrected in the 2006 China Statistical1 Yearbook. According to the general calculating methods used in the world, divorce rate is the ratio of the divorce figure to the average population in a region within a certain year, which is often expressed in permillage point. The major issue in question is how to understand and define the divorce figure. When a couple gets divorced, the divorce figure should be regarded as one or two? Related U.N. dictionaries and the demographic dictionary compiled by China both adopt divorce case to calculate the divorce figure. In other words, when a couple gets divorced, the divorce figure is one, said Xu Anqi, a researcher at the Sociological Research Institute at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Shanghai. However, the Ministry2 of Civil Affairs issued a document in 1988, stipulating3 that when calculating divorce figure, the denominator should be the total population and the numerator should be the number of times of divorces. “I think the problem lies in how one understands the meaning of ‘the number of times of divorces,’” said Xu. “Since the document does not give a clear meaning of what it means, people doing the calculating is prone4 to think that the number of times of divorces means the number of people who get divorced. In that case, one divorce case will be calculated twice.” Due to this incorrect calculating method, the divorce figure has been doubled in nearly all statistical books published in China. As a consequence, the data submitted to U.N. are also wrong, making international scholars draw a wrong conclusion about China's divorce situation. “Statistics from U.N. showed that at one time, China’s divorce rate was the highest in the world, even higher than that of the United States, which stunned5 many international scholars. Since Chinese statistical authority has corrected the mistake, similar correction should be made in all other sociological books and demographic dictionaries, as well as in textbooks,” Xu said. At present, China’s divorce rate falls behind the world average level. The divorce rate in Shanghai is now listed as No.4 or No. 5 in China, twice the average national figure.
