Chinanews, Urumqi, Jan. 9 – In responding to certain overseas persons' recent claim that Rebiya Kadeer, an ethnic1 separatist, was the mother of Uygur people, a senior official in Xinjiang said last Sunday that such assertation is “very ridiculous” and “defamatory to the whole Uygur people.”
This is the first time that a senior official responded to the claim on a public occasion.
Speaking at a conference on publicity2 work on Sunday, Nuer Baikeli, deputy secretary of the Communist Party of China's (CPC) Xinjiang Committee, questioned "how could Rebiya Kadeer be viewed as the mother of ten million people when she could not even educate her own kids very well?”
In responding to Rebiya Kadeer's recent nomination3 as a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize, Nuer Baikeli said her recent words and deeds showed that she “aims to destroy the peace and stability of Chinese society”, and her nomination “is entirely4 at variance5 with the original purpose of the Noble Peace Prize.”
Rebiya Kadeer, once the richest businesswoman in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous6 Region, had involved in drug trafficking and had serious economic problems. In August 1999, she was put under criminal detention7 on charges of endangering national security. Later, she was released on medical parole by Chinese judicial8 organs after promising9 never to engage overseas in any activities jeopardizing10 Chinese national security. However, after going abroad, she conspired11 with "East Turkistan" terrorists, smeared12 Chinese government and tried to separate Xinjiang from China. Not long ago, especially, they planned terrorist attacks in an attempt to undermine the activities marking the 50th anniversary of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
