Shortly beforehand, the parliamentary speaker, Sheikh Adan Madobe, urged Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed to appoint a new prime minister. MPs voted to sack the speaker and Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke later accused him of treason.
