Scientists have installed electrodes in the brain of this pegion to control its behavior. |
Chinanews, Qingdao, February 27 – Scientists in Qingdao, Shandong Province have installed several electrodes in the brain of a pigeon, thus they can control its behavior via electric stimulation1.
The researchers are from Shandong University of Science and Technology. “The electric stimulation is precisely2 controlled by computer programs,” said Su Xuecheng, the director of the project. Currently, they can order the pigeon to perform many complicated acts like take-off and landing, as well as turning right and left during flight.
“Robot bird is better than traditional mechanical ones, as there is no need to worry about power failure on birds. Besides, birds are much more flexible than common robots, particularly in a harsh environment,” said Liu Xiaofeng, a researcher.
It can be estimated that the robot birds will be put in use for rescue, photography, mapping, and even national defense3.
