Chinanews, Beijing, Mar1. 6 – A member of the CPPCC (Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference) National Committee recently said that the claim about global warming, a widely concerned issue in the world, might have been the result of hyping by some interest groups. He said that Chinese government should not reduce its energy consumption because of such saying, the Yanzhao Metropolis2 Daily reported.

Huo Yuping, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor at Zhengzhou University, made the statement in an interview on the sidelines of the annual session of the NPC (National People’s Congress) and CPPCC.

The climate change occurring on Earth might not have been caused by human activities, said the professor.

“There are controversies3 in the scholar circle as what caused the climate change on Earth. Some people proposed that tens of thousands of years ago, or even earlier, the earth was hotter than it is now, while at that time, there were no human beings existing. Based on this, I think that the global climate change occurring in recently years is not attributable to human activities and our energy consumption. The climate change does not happen in two or three years, or three or four years, but is the result of changes over hundreds of years,” he said.

If we overstress global warming, we will not be able to stop such environmental change. On the other hand, such saying might constrain4 some countries, including China and India, from achieving development, because without energy, we can not make any progress. Only if we can find some substitutes, like nuclear energy or solar energy, and only after these new energy resources can account for over 50% of the total energy use on Earth can we avert5 the change. Otherwise, the change is unavoidable, he said.

He criticised some media, including some government media, for hyping up the issue. He said that people who played up the issue included some scholars and some “interest groups”. He cited some Chinese oil companies as an example, saying that these oil companies “play up the issue because they are concerned with the oil interest rate.”
