Chinanews, Urumqi, Sept. 20 – After 20 years of work, scientists in Xinjiang have successfully increased the number of Przewalski horse, or Mongolian wild horse, from 18 twenty years ago to the present 290, with 266 being bred by local scientists. The success ratio of Mongolian wild horses has reached 86%, far higher than the world average success ratio of 25%.
Mongolian wild horse is the only wild horse species existing in the world now. It originally lives in Mazong Mountain in the border areas of Junggar Basin in Xinjiang, Gansu and Inner Mongolia. Due to heavy proaching activities, Mongolian wild horses became distinct in the 1970s, with only about 700 kept in Germany, Britain, and the United States, raised in captive or semi-captive environment. In 1986, the then Ministry1 of Forestry2 introduced 18 Mongolian wild horses from Britain and Germany and had them raised in the Jimsar County in Junggar Basin. China also established a wild horse raising center for scientific research on the wild horses. The work was designated by the Chinese government as one of the national projects to save eight precious animals in China. Scientists at the Xinjiang Wild Horse Raising Center created files for each horse, writing down their appearances and physical characteristics. They also established a pedigree for each horse and chose the strongest and genetically3 unrelated ones for reproduction. In 2001, scientists released the first batch4 of wild horses to natural environment. In August this year, the first horse living in the Xinjiang Kalamaili Nature Reserve gave birth to a foal, signifying that reproduction of wild-grown horses was successful.
