Chinanews, Beijing, Mar1. 29 – In Shangcai County, Henan, a professor was asking a doctor in the local clinic room: “How should you properly handle the used needle tubes and needle heads?”
“First destroy the needle heads in machines and then immerse them in disinfectant solution for 48 hours together with the needle tubes. Finally, burn them in fire,” the doctor, Luo Jianzhong, answered. The professor, called Gui Xi’en, who was from the affiliated2 Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, then went to Dinglou Village and asked a doctor, Cui Xiaohui, in the local clinic room: “Why don’t you wear gloves?” “If I wore them now, the patients would feel uncomfortable. However,I will wear gloves when I am giving treatment to them,” the doctor said. Professor Gui had been to Shangcai County more than twenty times. He was pleased to see that local doctors had made surprising progress in their AIDS treatment. Supported by government policies, many people have started to live a healther life in these AIDS villages, the Liaowang magazine reported. Wenlou Village is called the first AIDS relief village in China and Shangcai County is viewed as the country’s first AIDS relief county. Professor Gui, who is called Doctor Norman Bethune by local AIDS patients, found that many good clinic rooms had been built in these places to treat AIDS patients. More than one hundred kinds of medicines were placed on the shelves in these clinic rooms and all AIDS patients there had a medical filing record made for them. Every patient had been given a treatment card. The cards were printed with 100 types of medicines used for treating AIDS and 15 kinds of medicines used in emergency cases. These medicines were selected by local health bureau. With these cards, local patients could get medicines free of charge. They could also get some living subsidies3 by presenting another card called the Relief Registration4 Card. “I haven’t expected that you have made so much progress,” Professor Gui said to local villagers. He had followed the changes of Shangcai County and Wenlou Village for six years now and the changes taking place there were really beyong his expectation. In 1995 and years earlier, some working institutions and blood manufacturers set up some blood collection stations in Henan. Their improper5 collecting methods had caused many local blood donors6 to get infected with the AIDS virus. Later, many AIDS incidences were reported in these villages, especially in years around 2000. Now, 38 villages, located in 13 counties and 6 cities in Henan, are identified as villages with the highest incidence of AIDS disease. Prevention and treatment of AIDS is a world problem. In Henan, the preventive measures and treatment offered to local patients have gained the recognization of officials from the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children’s Fund, and the UN Development Program.
