Chinanews, Kunming, April 18 - According to the result of the 2005 1% sampling census1, the infertility2 rate in China is rising. Take Yunnan Province as an example. In 2005, there were 1.14 million couples suffering from infertility, nearly 10%, and the figure is increasing by some 25,000 annually3.
The annual net population growth in China is some 10 million, due to its large population base. However, infertility has started to affect the population structure and social development badly, and should be controlled. The two hospitals that are authorized4 to operate IVF in Yunnan have performed more than 1,200 such operations. Pollution, disease, malnutrition5 and bad habits like smoking, drinking and hot bath should be blamed for male infertility. Besides, the problem is attributable to the fast life pace and fierce competition in the modern society are attributable, too. Social pressures and late marriage are the two main reasons for declining female fertility. It is best for women to have babies before 30, and the latest pregnancy6 age should not exceed 35. Doctors suggest that young women have babies first, before devoting themselves to their career.
