Chinanews, Chongqing, Apr. 20 – A pair of baby boys, who were born sharing an abdomen1, were discharged from hospital on Wednesday after doctors successfully did an operation to separate them. This is the third time that doctors in Chongqing had successfully performed such operation. It indicates that medical institutions in Chongqing have reached world advanced levels in handling major organs inside human bodies.
The twin boys, named Chen Xin and Chen Qiao, were born in Peng’an County, Nanchong of Sichuan Province, on November 9, 2006. When they were born, the baby boys were linked together in the abdomen. They shared a liver but had separate hearts, kidneys2, and lungs. The joint3 part measured 27.5 centimeters in girth and 10 centimeters in straight length. The case was rarely seen in the world. In addition, since the twin boys were very weak when they were born, the situation added more difficulty to doctors’ surgical4 work, the hospital’s president said. On Febuary 8, 2007, over forty medical experts worked hard together and finally made the twins separate. After that, the twin boys stayed in hospital for 70-some days under the doctors’ extensive care. They recovered quickly and are now very healthy, just like ordinary babies. The doctors have taught the twin’s parents about how to take care of the baby. In future, they will pay regular visits to the babies to monitor their health conditions.
