Chinanews, Shanghai, May 11 - According to a report by the People Daily, a comprehensive family tree of all the Chinese in the world will be completed before the end of 2007.
Shanghai Library is in charge of the compilation1 of the comprehensive family tree, and the project has already taken them nearly 7 years. "It will be the most inclusive Chinese family tree ever when completed, comprising nearly all the genealogies2 we collected in China," said Wang Heming, the chief editor of the comprehensive family tree. Statistics shows that there are some 18,000 genealogies preserved in Shanghai, 10,234 in Taiwan and 8,102 in Beijing. The comprehensive family tree also covers 47,000 genealogies from abroad. "There will be approximately 70,000 entries of 10 million Chinese characters in the work, and all the books will be nearly 50 cm tall when piled up," said Wang. Currently, the editors are verifying the authenticity3 of the data they collected, and removing duplicated entries, to make this encyclopedia4 of Chinese families perfect. It can be estimated that the comprehensive family tree will provide important information for researchers in the field of history, economics, demography5, folklore6 and education science. The history and reality of 643 Chinese surnames can be found in the comprehensive family tree, 205 more than the classical "Bai Jia Xing" (Chinese surnames), and there are more than 2,000 entries for Chen, Zhang, Wang, Liu and Li families, more than 1,000 entries for Huang, Yang, Wu, Zhou, Lin and Xu families.
