Chinanews, Harbin, October 21 - Under careful protection, the population of boars in Heilongjiang Province has greatly increased these years, and several cases of boars harming people were reported. Thus Heilongjiang Provincial1 Department of Forestry2 announced the reopening of boar hunting season in Mudanjiang and Jixi to control boar population.
Boars are under second-level protection, and their reproduction rate is much higher than tigers, their only natural enemies beside humans. Thus the number of boars in Heilongjiang has boosted from 36,000 in 2000 to more than 70,000 this year, a threatening number. The hunting will also be under careful administration of the local departments of forestry of the two towns, where only 50 boars are allowed to be hunted each, and all the hunted animals must be handed over to authorized3 institutions.
