Chinanews,Beijing,May 29–There are 16,383 registered medical practitioner-psychiatrists2, or 1.26 psychiatrists for 100,000 people, much lower than the world average of 3.96 psychiatrists for 100,000 people. This information was revealed by officials with the Ministry3 of Health at the Second Excellent Chinese Psychiatrist1 Awards.
There are only 2.1 psychiatric nurses for every 100,000 people, while the average number of the world is 2.1.Besides, experts in this field, such as phyciatrists for children and the aged4, rehabilitation5 therapist, etc. are also in great need in China. 3/4 of anti-depression drugs are not prescribed by psychiatrist. This problem is more severe in the less developed areas such as Qinghai, Ningxia and Tibet in particular. According to sources with WHO, psychiatric problems have taken up 20% of all problems related to health, much higher than 10%, the average proportion of the world. The proportion of psychiatric problems is estimated by WHO to rise to 25% in the future 20 years.
