Chinanews, Shanghai, June 11 - According to the information released at the Eastern Forum1 of Science and Technology, there are one handicapped baby born in China every 30 seconds (1.2 million every year). In fact, about 20% of handicapped babies are born in China every year, and the incidence of neonatal defects is as high as 4% to 6% in the country.
Neonatal defects causes China a direct economic loss of 800 million yuan every year, not including the 15 billion yuan spent on their treatment. Experts suggest that Shanghai should build a neonatal defects treatment center to combine its medical resources to help handicapped babies born in the Yangtze River Delta2 and even the entire eastern China. The treatment center will also help train medical personnel on the treatment of such babies for other places, and it will improve the general public's understanding on the prevention and treatment of neonatal defects.
