Chinanews, Zhengzhou, Jun. 13 – When hearing about the gall1 having been taken out of a live black bear for use in traditional Chinese medicine, a five-year-old boy asked his mother to contribute money for black bear protection in his name.
Some 60 students from a high school in Henan Province launched a publicity2 activity in a Zhengzhou kindergarten on last Saturday. The students told the children there and their parents the unique living characteristics of black bears. Du Zhenbo, an organizer of the activity, said when she heard that peasants in a village in Sichuan Province had taken the gall from a live black bear, she was shocked, and asked her classmates to participate in such activities. Asian black bear can be found in India, Nepal, Afghanistan and China. According to Chinese medical classics, bear galls3 can be used for as medicine or food, but other kinds of medicine can also be used to substitute bear galls.
