Chinanews, Beijing, June. 21 – As the largest nuclear power cooperative program between China and Russia, the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant will not encounter any nuclear leakage1 incident, said an official from the Russian St. Petersburg Nuclear Power Research Institute on Tuesday.
The official made the statement at a press briefing by the Russian Information Agency’s branch office in Beijing. The first generating unit was put for commercial use earlier this month. The second unit can now generate half of the electricity as required and will be put into operation by the end of this year. The capacity of the first and second power units of Tianwan Power Plant is both 1.06 million kilowatts3. It was built with the AES-91 press water reactor4 (PWR) nuclear power sets made in Russia. Such PWR nuclear power sets are safer than most of the PWR nuclear power sets operating in the world and they are comparable to the most sophisticated PWR nuclear power sets now being developed in some developed countries. In some aspects, the nuclear power sets in Tianwan are equivalent or nearly equivalent to the level of the third generation of nuclear technologies now being developed in the world. Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant contains 4 one-million-kilowatt2 nuclear power generating units. Its construction area will allow it to build another four one-million-kilowatt generating units if needed. So Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant can contain altogether 8 one-million-kilowatt generating units with a total installed capacity of 8-10 million kilowatts. It can generate 60-70 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually5 and its output value can reach well over 25 billion yuan. As Chinese economy further develops, Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant will become another important nuclear power production base in China.
