Chinanews,Wuhan, July 4 - Wuhan experts warn against overheating pearl cultivation1 in the city, for it is destroying local lakes. "It only requires hundreds of thousands of yuan to contract a huge lake for pearl cultivation; however, such lakes may never be recovered even if we spend hundreds of millions of yuan on them," said an expert.
Pearl shells need eutrophied water to grow, but then such water will cease to be fit fro drinking. Usually, pearl shell breeders put a lot of fertilizers in the water, which will only add to the pollution of the water. Several local reporters and the Wuhan Municipal Environmental Protection Administration have conducted a joint2 survey, finding that pearl cultivation is very common in Wuhan. In Caidian District alone, more than 500 acres of lakes have been used for pearl cultivation, all of which are severely3 polluted. "Appropriate pearl shell cultivation in lakes may help purify the water, but it will only bring disaster if going too far," said a person from the Wuhan Agricultural Administration. In fact, most lakes in Wuhan are over-stuffed with artificially bred pearl shells. The lakes will surely be ruined if nothing is done to clean them.
