Chinanews, Xi’an, July 5 – According to a report by CCTV, a structure in the Changle Palace in the ruins of Changan of the Han Dynasty (206 BC – AD 220) has been confirmed to be an ancient icebox.
The walls of the icebox are very thick, the one facing the south even as thick as 5.5 m for thermal1 insulation2. There are 3 channels outside the icebox, for discharging the melt water, all leading to a pentagon pool. It is estimated that the ice was collected in winter from the Wei River nearby, so in summer the royal family members could enjoy cool drinks and fresh food. Some ice might also be used on ceremonial occasions.
