Chinanews, Xining, July 6 – In 1995, when China's first nuclear weapon research base was closed, nuclear waste landfill was built only several kilometers away from it. Now, the nuclear waste landfill has remained safe for 12 years.
The nuclear weapon waste landfill was located in Xihaizhen, the capital of Haibei Tibetan Autonomous1 Prefecture, Qinghai. This first nuclear weapon research base was built in the 1950s, where China's first atomic and hydrogen bombs were developed, earning for it the nickname "the Atomic City of China". Last April, the underground command center of the Atomic City was open to the public as a tourist sight. Local tourist department said that since 1996, the nuclear research base had received about 400,000 domestic and foreign tourists. Now, the Atomic City has been built into a garden town and a famous tourist site in Qinghai. Tourists can visit any part of the Atomic city freely and there is no need for them to worry about any nuclear radiation.
