Chinanews, Beijing, July 10 – Beihai Park became a sea of lotus flowers last Sunday. By taking special measures, the bloom season for over 50 kinds of lotus flowers has been delayed so that all different kinds of lotus flowers can bloom at the same time. According to Zhang Yan, a person in charge at Beihai Park, the lotus flowers will be at their best time for viewing in August, a month when the Olympic Games are held in Beijing next year.
When the Olympic Games are held next year, Beihai Park will turn into a large flower garden. Right now, gardeners at the park have selected some 50 different lotus varieties to be planted in the ponds. These lotuses will be planted in three batches1 so that the flowering season for some varieties, which originally open in July, will be delayed by one month, Zhang said. This year, the lotus flowers show at Beihai Park is larger and able to last for a longer time than previous years. More varieties of lotus have been introduced into the park. Over one hundred different kinds of lotus and 20-odd kinds of aquatic2 plants are displayed in the eight exhibition zones at the park. Altogether there are over 3,000 flower pots inside Beihai Park. In the Lotus Lake exhibition zone, different kinds of lotus flowers bloom at the same time in a pond as large as 8,000 square meters. Red and pink flowers, and green stalks stand above the shimmering3 water, with the White Dagoda, the park's landmark4, reflected in the lake, forming a spectacular scene. In Beijing, chrysanthemums5 usually bloom in November. By applying short-day flowering and other methods, gardeners can bring the bloom period of chrysanthemums forward by three months. By doing so, visitors at the Olympic Games will be able to see chrysanthemums blooming in August.
