Chinanews, Lanzhou, Aug. 1 – According to Lanzhou Morning News, the 220-km section of the Great Wall in Minqin, Gansu Province is currently surrounded by sands. Experts warn that the walls built in the Han (206 B.C.-220) and Ming (1368-1644) dynasties will be engulfed1 in sands in the near future.
In the old days, Minqin was an oasis2 that attracted many people to settle there. But now the oasis is seriously deteriorating3 under the impact of sandstorms. Experts are worried that human activities will accelerate the deterioration4 of the local environment, and the Great Wall of the Han Dynasty will be partly ruined. They also say that this section of the wall can be seen in aerophotos, but the photos also show that the wall is surrounded by sands. They hope the local government can take some effective measures to protect the wall.
