Chinanews, Shanghai, Aug 9 – Mr. Zhang was a uraemia patient in Shanghai. Since he could not get an appropriate kidney source, he had to rely on dialyse to support his life until he died three years ago.

On Wednesday, a medical forum1 titled “Support the Life of Uraemia Patients with Living Donors2’ Kidneys” was held in Shanghai. At the forum, medical experts pointed3 out that in Shanghai, about 8,000 uraemia patients had died like Mr. Zhang for lack of donors.

Information from the Ministry4 of Health shows that in China, about 1.5 million people need to take organ transplant surgeries every year due to organ failure. However, only 10,000 of them can finally take such surgeries. Due to the shortage of organ source, many patients have had to wait in despair until the situation worsens and they finally die.

“The shortage of organ source is a universal problem around the world. At present, the most effective solution is for the patients' relatives to donate their living organs to them,” said Tang Xiaoda, director of the Shanghai Organ Transplant Medical Association.

Although living organ donation has a high chance of success and the medical costs are rather low, in China only 4% of the organ transplants are done with living organs, far below the 30% world average level. In light of this, doctors from Shanghai Changzheng Hospital, Zhongshan Hospital and other hospitals in Shanghai urge the patients' relatives to voluntarily donate their organs to save the patients’ lives. On the whole, it will be “a lot better for the patients to receive living organ donations instead of relying on dialyse machines”, these experts said.

So far, about 200 living organ transplants have been done successfully in various hospitals in Shanghai. The Zhongshan Hospital has carried out a two-year research to trace the living situation of donors and organ takers. The result of the survey shows that all the donors who donated their organs in the hospital are in good health, and the receipients also live a normal life, just like the ordinary people.
