Chinanews, Aug. 14 – In 1995, construction of the 522-kilometer road in the Taklimakan Desert was completed, which was regarded as a miracle in road construction history. In 2006, a 47,000-mu ecological1 forest was set up in the desert, to the astonishment2 of the world.
Our reporter visited the forest recently. Xu Xinwen, an expert from the Chinese Academy of Sciences said that after scientific breakthrough, planting trees to fix the sand dunes3 has proven to be effective. He also revealed that the desert will never want for water, for there are at least 8 trillion tons of underground water there, only the chemical materials it contains make it difficult to plant any trees or grasses. Scientists have chosen 88 kinds of plants in the past 10 years, and currently local people can find snakes and rabbits in the desert.
