Chinanews, Wuhan, September 11 – Several experts said at the Forum1 on the Effects of the Three Gorges2 Project on the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River that the dam should not be blamed for the natural disasters happening near it. In fact, the building of the project has helped to improve the ecoenvironment in the Yangtze River Basin.
The building of the project has been helpful for flood control, for it has prevented the flood peak of the Chuanjiang River from entering the Yangtze River directly. That is to say, about 1/3 of the flood in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River has been put under control. From now on, at least 60 million people will not have to worry about fighting flood every year. Besides, the flood had diverted a great amount of mud into the Dongting Lake before the building of the project. Now, with the flood under control, the Dongting Lake is also saved from stagnation3. Some of the experts believe the eco-crisis in the Yangtze River existed well before the building of the project, and the project should not be responsible for it. In a word, the Three Gorges Project has enhanced water and energy security of China no less than it has improved the ecoenvrioment.
